In the book "A Separate Piece" the character Phinny grows a lot both mentally and physically. These changes only occur in the later part of the book because the author has yet to show use how Phinny acts. A few examples of physical changes are that he has to wear a large cast around his leg during most of the book because of what Gene did to him. A few examples of mental changes are when Phinny starters to not believe things he also stops to care so much about sports for him self but more for gene.

You can see the major mental changes in the last half of the book when Phinny comes back to the Devon Academy. One of the biggest changes is Phinny begins to not believe things like how Phinny does not believe that World War 2 is really going on. You also see this when Phinny does not believe what gene is tiring to tell him about he made him fall off the tree. I think that if Phinny had just believed Gene when he first tried to tell him that he made him fall off on purpose then he might still be alive. I think this because he just believed him and accepted it then when leopard told every one what he say it would have not been as surprising and Phinny would not have gotten so upset.
Another mental change that you see in Phinny is when he stops worrying about sports so much for him self and switches to trying to help Gene get into the Olymp
