Tyurin has good leadership qualities, whereas Shukhov lacks it. Tyurin knows what to do in the camps, and at the same time, knows how to survive and get warm. He told another two to get the coal stove going there and to pinch some boards and chop them up." Tyurin's quick skillful thinking helps the gang be more efficient and help them keep warm. Shukhov lacks this skill, but he is a good follower. He knows how to survive in the camp by doing jobs early in the morning to get a little more food, and does his best with his bricklaying with pride in it.
