One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a story about a man, Ivan Denisovich (Shukhov), who is in a Russian Siberian prison camp for expression of anti-Stalinist ideas. Alexander Solzhenitsyn describes the events of a single day in this man's life and his struggle to survive. He was in the Navy but was discharged because of his Kulak heritage and fled from the authorities before going to the camp. Shukhov considers him a good squad leader, because he knows how to bribe people and manipulate work reports to protect his men. Tyurin, the leader of Shukhov’s squad is one of the important characters of the book.

As a nineteen-year-old veteran of the prisons, Tyurin is an adept and respected leader who understands how to manipulate the prison system.
