For the father-son relationship, Elie gets closer. At the beginning of the book Elie's father was occupied with his business and the doings of his community. Elie's father discourages him to study the Cabbala when Elie asked if he could find a master to guide his studies for the Cabbala. Elie's father replies by saying "You must first study the basic subjects within your own understanding." (pg 2) From this we see that Elie's father isn't willing to give up his time to teach Elie, or to even bother finding a man who will help him with study the Cabbala.

During the long horrible run in the snow, the rabbi's son had ran away from him because he thought that his father was going to die after seeing him growing weak. "He had he believed that the end was near and had sought this separation in order to get rid of the burden, to free himself from an encumbrance which could lessen his own chances of survival." (pg 87) The Rabbi's son ran ahead of him because he didn't want to die along with his father. If the Rabbi and his son's relationship were closer, this would have not happened. They should have been watching out for each other and sticking together.
