In Alice Walker's The Color Purple, there are many similarities between the main character, Celie, and Alice Walker. Some examples are both are from poor black families from the south, both have issues with their appearance, and both have bi-sexual tendencies. There are some differences between the two also, such as, in The Color Purple, Celie does not have any positive male figures in her life, and Alice Walker does.

Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia February 9, 1944. She was the daughter of poor sharecroppers, and the youngest of eight children (Bloom 229). Since she was born in the early part of the twentieth century, "she grew up in the midst of violent racism, which combined with her family's poverty left a permanent impression on her writing" (Grade Saver). This can be seen through her characterization of Celie. Celie is an uneducated young black girl from Georgia who comes from a very poor family.

One other way that Alice Walker and Celie are similar is the way their life changes. During the story, Celie goes through some drastic changes. At the beginning of the story, she is just an unschooled poor black girl who is oppressed by her stepfather that rapes her. Then she marries Mr._____, who treats her as a slave. Celie has the ability to suffer and not get angry, she simply accepts things the way they are (Classic Notes). "At first fighting back does not even seem an option; survival seems the best she can hope for [...](Winchell 86). She has no control over any part of her life until Shug Avery takes her under her wing tries to teach her the way a strong woman should be. Shug stops Mr.____ from beating Celie and teaches her to stand up for herself. She also teaches Celie that she is worth something; that she should not let people run over her. Eventually Celie gets up enough courage to leave Mr._____, and move away. When she leaves, she starts her own business, making pants, to keep her occupied and it turns in to something a little bigger than she expected. Then her stepfather dies and she finds out that the house, land, and a store belong to her and her sister. Celie moves her business in to the house left to her. After moving back, she becomes friends with Mr._____, who she now able to call by his name, Albert, and she no longer feels controlled.
