A Comparison of Alice Walker and Celie from The Color Purple In Alice Walker's The Color Purple, there are many similarities between the main character, Celie, and Alice Walker. Some examples are both are from poor black families from the south, both have issues with their appearance, and both have bi-sexual tendencies. There are some differences between the two also, such as, in The Color Purple, Celie does not have any positive male figures in her life, and Alice Walker does. Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia February 9, 1944. She was the daughter of poor sharecroppers, and the youngest of eight children (Bloom 229). Since she was born in the early part of the twentieth century, "she grew up in the midst of violent racism, which combined with her family's poverty left a permanent impression on her writing" (Grade Saver). This can be seen through her characterization of Celie. Celie is an uneducated young black girl from Georgia who comes from a very poor family. Another thing about Celie that is similar to Alice Walker is their appearance. Celie is considered, by herself and by other characters in the book, to be very unattractive.
