Orthopedics

Orthopedic Surgeons have many duties and responsibilities. It also requires more schooling than most other professions. Orthopedics began in the 18th century with pioneering efforts of Jean Andre Venel. Originally, Orthopedic Surgery was used to treat crippled children with skeletal deformities. The word Orthopedic comes from two Greek parts. "Ortho" means straight and "pedic" has to do with children. Hence the original purpose of the specialty. It wasn't long before diseases like; Ostemyelitis, Poliomyelities, and Tuberculosis crippled children, and required specialized treatment. Before, most skeletal problems where treated by the family physician and the more serious cases where handled by a surgeon.
