Mark Foster was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 1994. Motor Neurone Disease is a fatal degenerative condition that attacks the nervous system. Sufferers rarely survive more than five years after diagnosis. Mark who is a garden designer is a father of three and is married to Nathalie. His quality of life is poor. He cannot eat, he cannot move, he cannot talk. His lungs need regular suctioning to help him breathe. He is not in pain; he is alert and aware but is trapped in a body that barely functions. It is obviously a very difficult subject with no real right or wrong answer. I think each case should be looked at individually by independent doctors and perhaps psychiatrists to help determine the outcome in each individual case.

An argument that could be brought up is that what if the family have an ulterior motive for seeing their family member dead sooner rather than later. There could be a will involved. Also the patient may feel that he may be a burden on his family and opt for euthanasia when he is not really comfortable with the idea to 'lessen his families suffering'.
