The Green Mile: A Celebration
The Green Mile: A Celebration of the Human Spirit The Green Mile may seem a far cry from a novel that celebrates life and the human spirit; however, many situations discovered throughout the novel muddle and bewilder general beliefs of life and death, good and evil, and innocence and guilt. The serial novel itself is not what it appears to be. The novel mentions Death Row, an electric chair, and death, but what The Green Mile is about is not the aforementioned subjects. The Green Mile is about celebrating the human spirit. The Green Mile celebrates the human spirit by condemning and troubling those who would take the human spirit (and appear to have taken it) and regarding those who possess the power to heal the human spirit with wonder and awe. The Green Mile supports the human spirit by not advocating and therefore condemning the premature ending of the human spirit's physical manifestation. The Good Book reads in the Gospel of Mark chapter 9 verse 40: "For whoever is not against us is for us." E Block is Death Row's predecessor. Men and women convicted of murder spend the rest of their lives on E Block waiting for the Grim Reaper to take them to eternal damnation. Paul Edgecombe, the head of E Block, states the fo
Paul Edgecombe is not a murderer only because the death penalty is legal; however he must atone for his executions. Paul's involvement in E Block haunts him partly because he knows he is a killer who has 78 dead under his belt. Eventually, the guilt and negative emotions he feels when he works at E Block force him to transfer to a Boys' Facility with his co-worker Brutus Howell. During Paul's employment at E Block his procreative power is hindered by a urinary infection. The infection may have been a divine punishment because of Edgecombe's participation in the executions. After John Coffey Edgecombe never executes again. God works through John to heal Paul as a sign of divine forgiveness towards Paul for the executions he presided over. Of course, Paul must atone for killing an innocent man and, more importantly, one of God's most mysterious and powerful gifts in the form of John Coffey. Paul must live a long life and see his loved ones die around him. Paul explains his atonement in the novel: "I will have wished for death long before death finds me" (534). He knows he is not immortal, but he doesn't know when he'll finally be granted eternal rest. The Green Mile ma
