Mata Hari

It all seems extremely overwhelming to know that a single person can have such a

tremendous impact on society. There are billions of people in the world, but only few who impact

the lives of us all, only few you who change the world, and only few who go down in history.

With that I'd like to acknowledge one woman who not only had a great effect on WWI, but went

down as the most seductive spy in the 1900's. The seductive spy in which I'm referring to,

Margaretha Zelle-Macleod, also so known as Mata Hari aided Germany by seducing French

officers and other men of high authority to obtain top secret information concerning France and

their war strategies. She was born in Holland, and was the daughter of a Dutch shopkeeper and

his Javanese wife. Mata Hari fell inlove with a Captain Rudolf Macleod and they were soon

married, shortly after they had a child with the name of Non Macleod.

Located in Antwerp Belgium was the academy of espionage run by Elsbeth Schragmuller,

in which Mata Hari attended. During her 15 weeks at the academy she received a great deal of

information concerning different areas of the "spying organization". The subjects she took

included, codes, ciphers, communicative dodges, the study of chemic
