I Heard The Owl Call My Name

What do we learn when put in a situation, were it demands a different way of living? Do we disregard everything we learned before this? Or do we open our minds and learn the most we possibly can. Well in I heard an owl call my name, by Margaret Craven, the main character Mark Brian, must choose either to learn from the Kwacutals or not learn anything at all.

In the beginning of this book a young vicar named Mark Brian is sent to an Indian village to teach the tribe of Christianity. One of the first things Mark learned is the way the village handles death. This was new to Mark from what his Bishop had told him. He learned when someone dies three mourners take turns sitting at the vicarage to mourn for the person who had passed away. They would do this until the person was buried. He also learned that he had to clean and fix the vicarage and the church by himself. He hoped that the Indians would help. In summary of the rest of the beginning, he woul


Everyday we are put in what Mark called a "New World". We all learn new stuff every day. We take many trips; well I know I do. Whether it's going to different cities, states, or countries. To us these places may seem just a vacationing place, but to Mark it was a new life. These places taught him many lessons that helped find him. Although he was put with people of a different culture for a long period of time, he did not regret anytime spent there. He learned many things he would have not if he did not go. He died knowing many lessons from the tribe, and a new culture other than the "white mans".

In the final chapters, Mark is put in some situations that help him realize what he has learned. Due to his illness, which is unknown to him. In his last days alive he lives with what he had learned the most from the Indians, helping someone in need. This happens in chapter 23. Mark had found out about a young Indian that had gotten drunk, stole a boat and went
