The Origins of the Cold War
Up to 1945 the most dominant countries were European, Britain, France and Germany, by the end of the war however this was very different. The retreating German army had destroyed whole areas of towns and industries, and allied bombing had left most of Germany in ruins. The two new superpowers were the USA and the USSR. The USSR was the biggest country and had the biggest army. It was though affected by the war, they had lost 20 million men and the German army had destroyed many buildings and factories. The USA however was very much different they had lost a lot of men but no fighting had taken place in America, their economy was also doing very well. These two countries were far ahead of their rivals and so they were called superpowers. In 1945 it was though clear that Germany was going to lose the war. The allied leaders meet in Yalta in the Ukraine to plan what was to happen to Europe after the defeat of Germany. The three leaders Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin managed to agree to certain key points: The USSR would join the war against Japan after the defeat of Germany. They agreed that Germany would be divided into four zones, British, American, French and Sovie
Three months after the Yalta Conference Germany had lost the war and Hitler committed suicide. A second conference had been organised for July 1945, five months after the Yalta Conference. Things though had changed: The USA had also just successfully tested an atom bomb on the 16 July in a desert site inside the US. At the start of the Conference Truman informed Stalin about this. The secret police were set up and they started to put an end to freedom and there economies were run for the good of the USSR. These countries were often called "satellites" in the West. The USA had successfully tested an atom bomb in the desert. Though Stalin's spies told him that it was going to happen, he was angry that the USA had not shared their knowledge with their ally. This meant that the USA could know destroy the USSR if it wished to do so. Soon all the local Communist leaders were replaced by pro-Soviet, pro-Stalin Communists. In 1947 the Comiform, the Communist information Bureau, was set up. This put all the Communist parties under Moscow's control, and they regularly meet with Stalin. This was so Stalin could keep a close watch on them to see if any of them were individuals. This also meant that they could be run for the good of USSR.
