Is Johnny a Hero?
What is a hero? This is a question that everyone has thought about at least at one point in there life. Everyone has a different definition of a hero, and not one person can meet every person's criteria of a hero. For example, imagine someone named Priscilla saving a retarded boy from drowning. Sounds normal right? Add this twist to it, Priscilla is a pig. Priscilla is also a hero, some people might not consider her as one though, because she is a pig. It all depends on the criteria. Is Johnny really a hero? He is called one by many people, but is he really? Selflessness is criteria of a hero that mostly everyone can agree on. Some people might think, "Well, I think to be a hero you have to save someone's life by risking your own." This is true, someone who does this can indeed be a hero. Couldn't risking their own life be considered selfless? Johnny is definitely a hero under the criteria of being selfless. Many times throughout the book Johnny is giving examples of where it is apparent that he cares about others more than he cares about himself. Johnny is not a hero because he was sick, but Johnny is a hero be
selfless or not? In Johnny's case, it shows that no matter how much pain he is in, he will be happy if others are happy, so to make others happy he will tell him that he is doing wonderful. The second example to be discussed is the scene after Johnny's surgery. Johnny knows that he is going to have big surgery when the barber comes in. After Johnny wakes up from the surgery, the first thing he does is asks his father how his book is coming along. (110) Johnny doesn't just ask that and then go on to complaining about how much pain he's in, or how tired he is, but instead he asks about his mother, and even after that he doesn't start complaining. Johnny didn't want his parents, or anyone else, to think that he was in any pain. He knew that it hurt The third example refers to Johnny not wanting to waste his, and others, life. Johnny's mother tries to get him to sit down, because she is worried about him being tired. Johnny replies with "there's no future in just sitting" (121). In a way, Johnny is being selfish here, but the selflessness is greater. By not sitting, he's not wasting his time he has left here on e
