Physiotherapy: injury & rehab
Focusing on a sport of your choice, use contemporary theory to critically discuss how a sports therapist could contribute towards the education, injury prevention and rehabilitation of the sport(s) participants. Provide examples of practice to support your theoretical argument.Kinesiology is essentially the study of human movement. The question „How a man moves' is an important question for a physiotherapist. Therefore, as a physiotherapist, it is not enough to just register that a movement has occurred, but as Galley and Forster (1982) suggest, „rather how the movement was produced, if it was normal, and if not, what was the cause of the abnormality and what must be done to correct or improve it'. It is only with this analysis that a physiotherapist can plan an appropriate program to help restore normal function, prevent deterioration and to use to advantage what remaining movement the patient has, so that all possible independence is gained. „A physiotherapist is actively involved in the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of sports injuries.' (Taylor and Taylor 198
This final phase of injury prevention focuses on preventing the reoccurrance of an injury. In the context of an injured runner who has had a knee problem, it is not feasable for a physiotherapist to allow the athlete to finish therapy and procede to train in exactly the same way as that that led to the injury in the first place. It is the role of the Sports Physiotherapist to devise an exercise programme that can be implemented by the athlete to continue their career without the thought of a reoccurring injury. 3. Psychological- Examines the sensations, perceptions and motivations that stimulate movement, and the neurological mechanisms that control them. Although these differing approaches are often taught as separate subjects, a physiotherapist will need to have a good overview of each so that the areas can be linked up wherever possible so that a wider appreciation of movement and its control is achieved.
