Lord of the Flies (tone, symb)
Writing is a historical form of storytelling that dates back to many centuries ago. Authors express different messages through their writings to convey ideas. In William Golding's first book, Lord of the Flies, he uses many elements that are needed to tell a story. Lord of the Flies is the story of a group of British boys from the same school who are marooned on an unknown island when their plane crashes. As the boys try to organize and formulate a plan to get rescued, they begin to separate and as a result of the discord, a band of savage tribal hunters is formed. William Golding uses the literary elements of tone, symbolism, and irony to exemplify his attitude of common savagery in man.One of the most significant literary elements used in Lord of the Flies would be tone. Golding shows his disgust over the boys' descending away from innocence when he states, "The usual brightness was gone from his eyes and he walked with a sort of glum determination like an old man." (p. 134). The
The tone, symbolism, and irony in the novel Lord of the Flies are used to illustrate the malicious nature of mankind. By the conclusion of the story, the boys have changed; they no longer act like English schoolboys, but like savages. The novel shows the reader how easy it is to revert back to the evil nature innate in man. Writing stories is an attempt to communicate the ideas of one person to others. The use of this form of storytelling will be used years from now to convey different messages. Golding depicts the evil in the heart of man, and uses irony to elaborate on this theme. Jack's hesitation in killing the pig when the boys first arrive on the island is a complete contrast with the savage chief he becomes. Jack hesitates in cutting open the pig's throat "because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood" (p. 31). Ironically, the thing that was first meant to rescue the boys off the island is turned into the barbaric
