TV Violence, I'm not responsib

Television has become the babysitter of millions of children, and the scapegoat for their parents. It riddles academic studies with the "how" when something goes a-rye. How could this happen to a child? How can we stop this from happening? How could the television industry not want to protect the innocent? How? How? How? "Everyone now knows that 'studies show' that media violence causes the real thing. Studies show no such thing. As human beings, we live in symbolic universes where words and images stimulate our thoughts and arouse our feelings" (Chatelle). In this paper I will argue that the issue of violence on television is not an issue of "protecting the innocent", but rather an issue of freedom.

Millions of people watch violent Television without becoming violent or enraged. To say that the effects of violence on Television will breed a generation of miscreants is to say that ice cream causes rape. It is a fallacy of logic, literally the conclusion "does not follow" the evidence and the warrant. Despite the fact that rape increases as the consumption of ice cream increases, nobody would ever make this claim. Yes, there is a correlation between the two, ice cream and rape as w

Because children learn in a monkey see monkey do style, known as the Modeling Theory, one can no more blame television than parents for violent behavior. Children who witness the constant abuse of the mother by the father will have tendencies toward violent mimicry. They will roll play this way because this is what they have learned. Columnist Scott B. Carpenter reflects upon the truth of this statement and comments:

ell as Television and violence. But it cannot be logically deduced that ice cream or television cause rape or violence. This type of behavior is not uncommon to Americans though. "...[I]n the 50s, 'liberals' waged holy war against E.C. [sic] comic books, which were imaginatively written and beautifully drawn, because 'studies showed' that they caused 'juvenile delinquency.' The comics were banned but crime continued unabated" (Chatelle).

Society should not allow people to become parents if they are religious fanatics, racists, spouse abusers, alcoholics, drug addicts, poor, single or just straight up irresponsible. "...[W]e have the right to choose what we view, by extension parents have the right to make that choice for their young children. The off button is of no use when you're not around" (Chatelle). It further follows that if the parents were around more often and monitoring their children, then their children most likely would not go through with their presupposed violent actions.

The most flourishing illustrated magazines [in France], such as l'Echo des Savanes, Actuel, Charlie-Hebdo, Hara-Kiri ... are full of features inspired by the most outrageous ideas and events. The more forbidden, the more shocking the subject, the better it is. So, no taboos. They obviously prosper from it and as far as I know, French society has not become more criminal than before the magazines became a fact of life, perhaps even less. Readers distance themselves with a kind of transparent armour from what they see or read. All this is for them an unreal universe which -- perhaps -- serves to defuse their inner tensions [sic] (Markiewicz).

Watching television is just as much a freedom as having children. And "[c]ontrolled freedom, no matter how benevolent, is always lobotomized freedom" (Markiewicz). If it is the case that people want the liberty of having children then they should do so without infringing on our liberty to watch violent, explicit or sexually inappropriate material. If society is concerned with what children watch then they should evaluate and concern themselves with the actions of the parents. Before we censor television perhaps we should screen potential parents.

Violence on television is not an issue of "protecting the innocent", but rather an issue of freedom. "We must believe in the existence of a collective discerning intelligence which [sic] excludes necessi
