The writer's point is most of the student's want the degree as it was free gift they can even ask for it. As a teacher he felt prickly for that because he noticed his student coming to him or call him after the final grade grades were posted. They were, as he felt like ignorant asking if there is any way to pass his class or to get C instead of D because they explain their reasons for him. It is too late to ask for better grades. One of the reasons was "I will loose my scholarship if I get D, can you change it to C?" He was getting frustrated from these students because even some of them knew that they don't disserve to pass the class for their poor effort but would ask for grade; this was surprising for him.
