Freedom from Fear. This was one freedom Anne did not possess. Throughout this book, Anne talks of her life during World War II in the Secret Annex. On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland, beginning World War II and on July 9, 1942, Anne and her family went into hiding. Throughout the Diary Anne records the emotions she felt, as she grew from a child to the first stages of adulthood in the cramped confines of the annex. Anne certainly knew what despair was. Many times in her stay in the annex, she felt it deeply, when relations with her fellow inmates were strained to breaking point. Towards the end of their stay in the annex, Anne makes a close connection with Peter and spends many hours upstairs with him. "This morning Peter asked me to if I would come again one evening, and said that I really didn't disturb him, and if there's room for one there's room for two."
This was only the beginning of Peter and Anne's relationship. As time progressed she received her first kiss from Peter Van Daan. "Remember yesterday's date, for it is a very important day in my life. Surely it is a great day for every girl when she receives her first kiss? Well, then, it is just as important for me too!"
