Music
How do we understand the language of music? Music is not a language to be learned. Rather it is an emotion that must be felt with the soul. Music in all its forms is heard differently by each and every person based on experience, emotion and fantasy. No matter what culture you belong to, every human hears music differently and interprets it that way. Although it is impossible to translate music as we would words, that does not give the emotion any less meaning or relevance. Sometimes it is the music of life that can shape where we will go, how we will express ourselves, what we will feel and how we will relate to the rest of the world. I venture to say, "music in the rhythm and emotion of life, without it there'd just be words." Every human, whether Caucasian, Native, African, Norwegian or Korean, blind, illiterate, or short, is capable of understanding music. Not only are they capable of creating music in the form of their choice, they are also able to interpret it according to their own emotion. Music is a necessity in our lives and without it, there'd be no meaning. Even infants respond to music. From a fetus within the mothers womb, they recognize the beauty in a tune. It would be odd in a case to care for toddl
In this story the brother also shows us a great insight to the gift of music. His comment says that " All I know about music is that not many people ever really hear it. And even then, on the rare occasions when something opens within, and the music enters what we mainly hear, or hear corroborated, are personal private, vanishing evocations." Sonny's brother sees that music is not listening to a sound, it is listening to someone's soul. Listening to something we may not ever truly be able to feel or understand but someone has. Someone has felt something so strong even they may no fully understand it but the only way they can express the cluster of emotions is to express it, through music. We see clearly the emotions that music can touch when Sonny's brother is listening to Sonny play the piano, and suddenly he is overwhelmed by these emotions and memories. He remembers his mother again, remembering her life, the hardships she must have endured, he remembers his little girl, his wife's tears and all this tugged at his own emotions resulting in a shed of tears. This emotional ensemble is only a piece of what music can do for us. This man was hearing the music because he wanted to, he was ready to hear it, feel it and experience it. He was open to knowing his brother, understanding the path that his life had taken and coming to terms with the fact that music had the power to change a life. Sonny was influenced greatly by music. It was his love of jazz that led him blindly down the path he chose. He could hear the emotion and feel the beauty played by the great musicians of his time. He wanted to be a part of that because he saw it as an escape from his world. It was a way out of the poverty stricken streets of Harlem. Sonny saw that music was one of the only things he could control in his life and as a young man he was blinded by these insights to the life of a musician. As Sonny grew older and ventured into music to become a musician, his life changed. No longer was he able to play because he loved it and because he wanted a way to express himself but he felt trapped in that life, in the life he had become. Later in the story, "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin, we see Sonny reflect on his own life. We see him gather revelation
