The Spanish government did not form successful colonies in the New World because of their obstinate desire to convert Native Americans to Christianity and their vain hunt for gold and riches. Many explorers from Spain embarked to the New World specifically to find gold and become rich. They robbed and stole from the Native Americans and raped many women native to the land. Probably even more infuriating to the "Indians" was the uncompromising need to convert them to Christianity. Throughout history, religion has been the one taboo that has caused more wars and hate than any other political issue. The Spanish saw no reason to form alliances; on the contrary, they treated the Native Americans very inhumanely and cruel.
The Spanish enslaved all the "Indians" and forced them to do all the physical labor that the colonists did not want to do. The London Company landed on the Virginia Colony in 1609. They came to strengthen the colony and take control. Lord De La Warr set up strict laws that helped the colony thrive. With the new governor, "Indians" were treated very badly. A lot of them were killed. Also tobacco began to be planted. This was monumental. Tobacco made the colonists lots of money and helped in the planting of crops and the raising of cattle. Population grew almost immediately. Land became sought after because of tobacco. Other chain of events also helped with the productive establishments of the colonies. (This included war with Indian tribes and inhumane treatment towards them.)
