A detailed Summary of Economic Inequality

It is a general belief that the unequal distribution of wealth and resources can produce conflict within society. Inequality has been prevalent for many years but was generally not considered a social problem. People around the world are becoming more and more aware of the gap between the rich and the poor. With the assistance of the government, by creating tax breaks, the rich seem to be getting richer while the poor are remaining poor therefore widening the gap. Economic inequality seems to be at the heart of all societies. As the economy changes, whether gradually or suddenly, it seems to have an effect on all classes of people. I feel that it would be crazy to think that true economic equality will ever occur, despite the many attempts, due to the many factors which are dependent on one each other in one way or another. For an example; the amount of education that one attains can be dependent on their wealth while the amount of wealth can also be dependent on the caste in which we are born. If we are lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family we may have better chances in life than others who are not.

Although there are several ways to measure inequality, income is the most widely used within our society. The higher the income the more advantages one has such a better housing, health care, power, higher material levels along with higher educational attainment. Educational attainment is also used to measure inequality but the level to which one attends college is generally dependent on the amount of income available. High levels of inequality put top quality education and training out of reach for the lower income people while people who have higher incomes can attain these easier. It is realized that most people can attend college, but the elite colleges are out of financial reach for the majority of the population. Some of the improvements made by the government for better health care for the disadvantaged and by raising the education standards in public schools have made improvements towards equality but has not depleted it as of yet.

My experiences have led me to believe that the world revolves around money to survive but yet there are so many outside factors that have a profound effect on income levels. I feel one disabling factor of this family is single parenthood. If there was a working father figure, the situation may have been different. The children's chances within life may have improved. I can also blame the government and society for some of these types of situations also. The government aids businesses so they can have a higher survival rate but when assistance is given to people who are desperately in need society deems them to be worthless or and lazy and a problem. These people, in my mind, were not bad just in distress with very little help from the government and just doing what they felt was necessary to survive. They live in a small apartment in an extremely lower income level neighborhood and are simply trying to attain the basic necessities of life at any cost.

John experiences a deliberate act of cruelty on the bus ride from Dillard University back to town after visiting. Not only was John degraded by having to sit in the back of the bus, when John rang the bell to exit the bus at the next stop, the driver intentionally refused to let him exit the bus. The driver drove 8 blocks past John's stop and finally let him off only because some white passengers were getting off also. This is just once instance of the Authoritarian Personality theory. Although John, who was being provoked by the driver, still remained calm throughout the situation so as to not create any further incidents. At this point it seems as though the white bus driver was intentionally provoking John to react in an inappropriate manner like the white man expected from a black person. The frustration-aggression theory also comes to mind when I read about the Mack Parker lynching case. Due to the actions of a few white people the black people seemed to blame all white people for the incident even though a chosen few were involved.
