Araby

The first association connected with "Araby" that came to my mind was that this story is dark, gloomy and brown. This story is definitely not a happy one. All throughout the story I could not find a single description of something bright, vivid, light, and I mean not only colours, but feelings and emotions too. But there is one exception - the moment when the boy, the main character of the story "Araby", is impatient in his waiting for "the big day", which is going to the bazaar.

The action takes place in the first half of the 20th century, in one of London's districts. A boy, who is about 12 years old, lives on North Richmond Street and leads a normal life for a boy of his age. One day he realizes his interest to Mangan's sister and Mangan is his fellow. In a conversation with that girl is mentioned the name Araby, the bazaar, and going to this bazaar gives the boy a chance to show the girl his feelings towards her and an opportunity to start some kind of good relations between them. But the boy fails.

In the beginning of the story there is a description of the house. The way author describes it, and that first comes the description of the house, but not of a main character, creates an

Even when the boy sits in the train that goes to the bazaar, it becomes clear to the reader that he will not manage to come on time. The author gives certain hints that lead us to that thought, for instance, " a deserted train" or " I remained alone in a bare carriage".

Another symbol I have found is the colour brown. The author mentions the girl's brown dress, "brown faces of the houses", and all together this creates the atmosphere of the story, which is rather gloomy. An element of irony I found in the boy's thoughts while he was waiting "for the big day". He is still a child, but he says: "I had hardly any patience with the serious work of life which, now that it stood between me and my desire, seemed to me child's play, ugly monotonous child's stay." I do not think that in his age there can be something of so serious importance.

idea that the whole story is about this house.

"The former tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing-room. Air musty from having been long enclosed, hung in all the rooms, and the waste room behind the kitchen was littered with old useless papers."

"Her dress swung as she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side." Every morning the boy watches her door and follows her during his way to school. He thinks about the girl every moment, when he is at school and when he comes from the market.
