Underage Drinking

Underage drinking has been a major issue in the last few years in the United States. Twenty-One is now the legal drinking age in our country. The term legal age is a situation that has been questioned by a lot of people throughout the years, especially teenagers that are at least eighteen but below twenty-one years of age. How fair is it that they set a legal age limit on alcohol? Some people do not understand why they developed this law and stand by it so strictly.

In 1987 the Minimum Legal Drinking Age Law was passed to "make it illegal for any person who is less than 21 years old to either purchase, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages or to misinterpret their age to obtain such beverages" (Lowering the Drinking Age, 2001, Gotta, Renee 1). Also in 1987, there was a law that was brought to attention by the Adult Responsibility Law that was trying to prevent underage drinking (Lowering the Drinking Age, 2001, Gotta, Renee 1). What this law did was threaten adults who were of age with criminal punishment if they purchased alcohol for minors. What people don't think about is that if they would purchase alcohol for a minor, and something happen to them while they were drinking, the person who purchased it is liable for

It is totally unfair for them to raise the drinking age to twenty-one. This is one of the only things that a young adult over the age of eighteen isn't allowed to do legally. Stated by (Engs & Hanson, 1998) If you are above the age of eighteen you are legally allowed to vote, purchase tobacco products, get enrolled in the military, get married without the parent consent, there are number of things that you are allowed to do when you turn eighteen. But why is it that your not allowed to drink. If you're mature enough to get married, or enroll in the military to defend your country, how is it that you're not mature enough to drink?

A lot of people will read statistics and consider younger drivers to be involved in drunk driving incidents more then someone who is between twenty-one and forty. I also thought that was true until I was doing my research and noticed that statistics do not show that there is a higher rate for fatalities coming from a drunk teenage driver. There is no information sating that evidence, and cannot be proven until they take all ages above twenty-one and solve it. Since the drinking age has been raised to twenty-one, drinking has decreased. But what people do not know is that drinking has been decreasing before 1987. Since passing this law there has been no major changes. In 19992 the U.S Census Bureau did a study on males between the ages seventeen to forty-four, to see if they were ever involved in a physical fight after drinking. Studies show that ma
