We need a government because it maintains order, protects its people and persecutes the criminals. Without a government anarchy would reign where people would basically do anything they want. Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is a story about a group of boys stranded on a deserted tropical island. To maintain some kind of order, the boys all agree to set up a government consisting of rules and regulations. They use the conch to represent a democratic government but towards the end the conch fails and a dictatorship rules all.
