Oedipus and Antigone
A tragic hero is shown in both the plays Oedipus the King and Antigone written by Sophocles. Oedipus and Creon are both tragic heros with many similarities and differences. Antigone, however is more of a true modern hero rather that an ancient Greek tragic hero. Oedipus is self-confident, intelligent, and strong willed. Ironically these are the very traits which bring about his tragic discovery. Creon on the other hand does what the people want him to do and does not do what he feels right which leads him to his downfall. Antigone has an ideal example of the human ability to choose right over wrong. All these characters help to shows these qualities throughout the plays so the audience has a better understanding of them. Oedipus brings his on down fall upon himself right from the beginning of Oedipus the King. Oedipus was so determined to find the killer of King Laius saying, " I pray solemnly that the slayer, whoever he be, whether his hidden guilt is lonely or has partners, may he wear his unblest life out evilly, as he is evil. And for myself I pray that if, with my privity, he should become an inmate of my house, I may suffer the same things which I have just called down upon others"
he King 82). Creon's motive of determination was not to back down from his word and law. The law was whoever buries Polynecies would be publicly stoned to death, since Polyneices did not deserve a proper burial for his actions in war. Creon later finds out that Antigone has Antigone and Creon have different ideas of what is right and what is wrong. However one cannot say who is right or wrong, that would be a matter of opinion. Both have their reasons for their own actions. Antigone has the laws of heaven as well as her family in her mind, on the other hand Creon's concern is his city and it's greatness. Antigone is a character of strength, dignity, and determination. After losing both brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles, to the battle of Thebes, Antigone is faced with a decision that questions both her loyalty and love of her brother Polyneices. When Creon orders that Eteocles receives a proper burial while Polyneices lay un buried and left for the wild animals to feed on. Antigone disagrees with Creon's ruling and
