A detailed Summary of Federalists War of 1812


Due to their anti-war opinions, the Federalists were viewed by some as disloyal and treasonous during the war of 1812. As shown in Article III, section III of the constitution, "treason is the act of levying War against this country, or in adhering to its Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court." According to Random House Webster's Dictionary, 3rd edition, disloyalty is "not being true to your duty of obligation." These definitions will shows that although disloyal, the federalists were not treasonous.

During this time the Federalists didn't want to go to war, and for a very understandable reason. None of the reasons for the U.S.'s involvement in the War made a difference to them. The federalists lived in the north, primarily, and didn't care that the southern states were losing slaves to Florida, which was under Spanish control. The Federalists also maintained a thriving industrial society and didn't need to expan


d westward or north into Canada in order to obtain land for living and farming. Finally, the Federalists didn't care about the impressments of sailors, only that the goods were being imported.
