For Judaism, Abraham's covenant with God shows that actions are far more important than beliefs. Reading from Genesis 17:1-27, Abraham is shown to make a promise to God and God to Abraham that involves rights and obligations on both sides. By this covenant, Abraham and his people would agree to follow his laws, acknowledging Him as their sole king, and God would acknowledge them as his particular people and be especially mindful of them. God commands all of the believers and followers of Him to be circumcised as a representation to this covenant. Abraham agrees to have the Sons circumcised and so it is done. The covenant is formed, and so therefore, in a "wide sense", Judaism is the sum of the descendants of Abraham.

The Christian foundation for the belief in Abraham as the father of their people is quite different. Christians do not stress the action, or the adherence to the law, as the predominant outcome of the covenant with Abraham. Muslim response to the Abraham stories would probably be the most animate rejection. To me, it seems as if the Islamic religion is the most stubborn. This is due mostly to the belief that Muhammed is the greatest prophet, and everything he said was completely right. After reading the Genesis story, they would probably think that some stuff was left out or forgotten such as the belief that the traditions and rituals of Muslim belief should be followed. They would probably say that Christians stress too much importance on Jesus who was a lesser prophet than Muhammed and that faith is not the only lesson that Abraham bestowed upon us. Muslims would agree with both religions accounts that Abraham and God had a special relationship and that Abraham chose to follow God's commandments and believe in one God, but they would also add that this God (Allah) taught Abraham complete submission to him and the Muslim traditions. And also, that to be accepted, one must perform certain rituals to become mighty and wise.

Jewish, Christian and Muslim people alike would probably all agree and disagree on many aspects of the portrayal of Abraham. Let us begin with Jewish reactions. The Jewish people would probably not agree with the fact that the Laws are not as important as faith. While Jewish people live a life based on self-worth, Christians beliefs are based on Jesus' self-worth. Jews would also disagree with the fact that belief in Jesus had anything to do with Abraham at all as they do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. However, because Christianity does show belief in one God and does acknowledge the covenant established with Abraham, I think Jews would encourage Christian teachings over polytheistic or atheist teachings. I believe Jews would react with much acceptance to the Islamic story of Abraham. The basic teaching of both is to follow the Laws of God and obey his commands. However, I think Jews would profess the need to Muslims to be circumcised in order to demonstrate this following.
