Often in short stories a younger character changes as the result of a older characters influence. The Medicine Bag was about a boy who was ashamed of his grandfather. He was ashamed of him because he was a dirty indian. He lied and told his friends that he was a tall, noble chief. One unexpected day his father walked from a long distance to see his family.His friends got a glimpse of his poor state and he was very ashamed and hurried him into the house.

Little did he know his friends thought he was neat. His grandfather got very sick and gave him a small leather bag with sage and a stone and was passed down from generations. The third story was Thankyou Ma'm. It was about a poor black boy and all he anted was a pair of blue suede shoes. He ran up to a old woman on the streets and tryed to steal her purse. She saw him and retaliated in a different way then most people. She yelloed at him at first of course but then made him follow her home. He did not know why all he wanted to do was leave. He appologized to the lady ,any times but she had a unique way of handeling it. She brought him into her home and fed him a home cooked meal and talked to him a while. He told her that he tried to take her money because he wanted blue suede shoes. The lady told him he better go on home but before he left she gave him 10 dollars so he could buy the shoes. He was confussed by this act of kindness. She gave him the ten dollars so he would learn that sometimes its better to ask people then to be dishonest and steal. She also felt badly for the boy because he hadnt had a real meal in a few days. She understood his wants and was kind enough to fullfill them.
