MacBeth Motifs
Motifs play a very significant role in the play MacBeth. Some of the motifs are more obvious then others and some play a larger role in the play, but without them, the play would just not be the same. I have choosen to take an in depth look at three specific motifs, although there are more than three motifs in the play. The first of the three motifs is nature, in the play different scenes have different objects of nature. Rarely does one see a sunny pleasant scene. Almost all of the scenes are either dark, at night or rainy, and sometimes all three. Any time a killing was near or one was being done, it was never pleasant outside. For example, when King Duncan was killed it was at night and a storm was going on outside. Again, when Banquo was murdered it was at night, and this time deep in the woods. Even if it was the middle of the day and a murder was near, the sun was not shinning. The scenes where evil was brought out in people were gloomy and dark. The second motif is animals, but not any old animal, the animal
As hounds and greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels, curs, shoughs, Distinguishes the swift, slow, the subtle, water rugs, an demi-wolves are clept In this quote Macbeth refers to Banquo as the dog when he is talking to the murderers. Macbeth says Banquo is the dog and reason for their misfortune. Another time when an animal of prey appears in the play is when King Duncan is slain, an owl hoots out side the window. s used in the play were mean, ugly, animals of prey. There was birds like owls and hawks, many different kinds of dogs including greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels and many others. A quote said by Macbeth supports this motif, The last of the motifs is blood, blood meant so much to the play because there was so much of it. Blood has a larger role then the other two motifs because without the killing and blood, the nature and animals would not be needed. Although, nature and animals are still very important. Blood appears in many places throughout the play, one time is before Macbeth is going into King Duncan's bedro
