Romeo/Juliet Translation Act 2
O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?Deny thy father, and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, Thou art thyself though, not a Montague. What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O! be some other name: What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name; And for that name, which is no part of thee,
I chose this monologue because of it being a world favorite love story. I thoroughly enjoy this scene of the play. It takes place in Capulet's beautiful orchard with Romeo first speaking of Juliet without realizing she is above listening. It shows the love they have for one another, how strong it is and what they are willing to sacrifice to be together. I also chose this particular monologue because it strongly illustrates the power of fate, love and hate. Juliet is a daughter of Lord Capulet. She falls deeply in love with Romeo before realizing the difference in their names is their families rivalry. Thus creating a barrier between them. However, Juliet is willing to do anything to be with him. The couple go off to be wed in secrecy after Romeo
