The Hindu society consists of four castes of jatis groups. It's a term primarily to the basic divisions of Hindu society in the India's subcontinent. The highest of the groups is Brahmans, the priestly castes that dominate the groups. Next are the Kshatriyas, traditionally warriors, rulers and large land owners. Third are the Vaishyas, mainly farmers or associated with commerce. The lowest are the Shudras who are the laborers and artisans (compton's 68). The outsiders are called the untouchables who are leather workers or scavengers. a caste can be indentified only on relation to other casts where an ethnic group can be considered and analyzed in isolation. Brahmans act as family priests of members of most castes of high and middle status, but not considered impure. brahmans priests of certain religious orders are often recognizable by their so-called "caste marks". they are designs of white, yellow, or red paste painted on their forehead, for countless generations they functioned as priests, scholars, teachers, scribes and government officials. brahmans recieve fees and gifts from other castes, but never give any gifts of ceremonial importance. not all brahmans castes are equal, but even the least eminent brahman sub castes are ritually superior to the highest of the non- brahman castes.
