Flag Burning
Fifty one white stars, and thirteen red and white stripes should not be anywhere near the line of fire. The legalization of flag burning should not be prohibited in our country. Flag burning is absolutely not a valid form of political expression under the first amendment, because it does not allow for the desecration of sacred objects. The second argument against flag burning is that there are many other ways for someone to express their dislike for the American democratic system than to burn one of its most sacred objects. Lastly, and most importantly, flag burning is an act that could possibly cause a large amount of violence if done in a public arena. The first amendment does provide protection to demonstrators wishing to voice their political opinions vocally and symbolically, but the amendment does not allow for the desecration of sacred objects such as flags, cemeteries, and public monuments. Though the Supreme Court, in the case of Gregory Johnson (1989), ruled that it was in fact constitutional to allow people to burn the flag, the evidence against this ruling is overwhelming. The law defined desecration as "physical mistreatment of such objects in a way which the accused knows will o
I would hate to be a part of a country that inspires nationalism in all of us; wanting every citizen of this nation to be proud of its country, and at the same time to allow the desecration of the one thing that represents all that. It doesn't make any sense. The flag represents a monument and the unity of the United States. Why would anyone want to destroy that? In the words of Albert Einstein "The strength of the Constitution lies entirely in the determination of each citizen to defend it. Only if every single citizen feels duty bound to do his share in this defense are the constitutional rights secure." Flag burning is an extremely offensive method of expressing one's anger towards the American government or America itself. There are many other methods of expressing contempt such as vocal protests, boycotts, and marches. These types of protest are less likely to offend anyone. The flag stands for much more than the fifty states, it represents battles fought for the United States by hundreds of thousands of veterans. The flag represents national unity. People have gone overseas and died in order to protect what that flag symbolizes to them. There are many incidents of flag burnings of American Legion flags. To me this is just disrespectful. These are the people that fought for what we have today. The freedom to walk down the street in safety is owed to these veterans. What exactly does the burning of their flags represent? Apparently protestors, or arsonists, decide they need to take their protests a step further and desecrate the most sacred symbol of the United States. ffend one or more persons likely to observe or discov
