Jack Dempsey

During the 1920s people in the United States turned out in masses to witness various sporting events throughout the country. Professional boxing was arguably the most popular attraction for the sporting crowd and fighters like Harry Greb, Benny Leonard and Mickey Walker consistently brought out fans by the thousands every time that they fought. However, no one could fill the seats the way that Jack Dempsey could.

Jack Dempsey was born in Manassa, Colorado on June 24, 1895. He grew up in the various mining towns of Colorado and it was there that he got his first taste of professional boxing. From 1911 until 1914 Dempsey had hundreds of barroom fights and it is not certain when his first professional bout occurred, but whenever it was he fought using the moniker of "Kid Blackie."

From August 18, 1914 up to July 4, 1919, Dempsey left a trail of beaten heavyweights in his wake, most by early round knockouts. Due to the f

After choosing not to defend in 1922, Dempsey fought twice in 1923. He won a fifteen round contest in Shelby, Montana against Tommy Gibbons. The event nearly bankrupted the town and most who saw the fight were greatly disappointed because Dempsey had not knocked his man out, but his next bout would not disappoint.

1924 and 1925 saw Dempsey fighting only three and four round exhibition bouts, which in turn may have aided in his losing the title to Gene Tunney on September 23, 1926. The bout went ten rounds and Dempsey had not trained as he did before winning the title and as a result a new heavyweight champion was crowned. Not to take anything away from Tunney because he was one of the best to ever lace up a glove, but had he met the Dempsey of seven years before, it is very doubtful if Tunney, or any other heavyweight in history, would have lasted five rounds with the man people called "The Manassa Mauler."
