An Electrifying Journey

It's electrifying! So stop, jump in, buckle your set belt, and get ready for a new automobile. Electric automobiles have been around since the early 1900's. For those who are not familiar with the electric automobile: "An electric vehicle consist of a battery that provides energy, an electric motor that drives the wheels, and a controller that regulates the energy flow to the motor" (Brant 5). Electric vehicles can improve our future in a number of ways, but scientist are finding it very hard to get these cars on the road. This problem brings up four important questions for research: What is the estimated cost of the electric automobile? What are the benefits of the electric automobile? What are the disadvantages of the electric automobile? What are the opinions and views of people who own an electric automobile? I feel that these cars are two costly, they have a number of benefits but society looks at the disadvantages over the benefits, and the only people who are really worried about the effect of electric automobiles on our future are the ones who own them.

Automobile companies are pouring billions of dollars into developing and improving electric automobiles each year. The more they have

There are some disadvantages that come along with the electric car. From what many people are saying, "Batteries don't have what it takes to carry the revolution very far into the future" (Miller, Briggs 1). Electric vehicles are not your best choice for transcontinential travel, or long trips in general. The farthest and ultra lightweight model has gone on one charge is 238 miles: "Few people on this highway-loving nation will buy them" (Miller, Briggs 2). Technical progress has been very slow. "The advanced lead-acid batteries used by the Impact are more efficient than those in ordinary cars, yet not much different from the batteries that powered electric buggies in 1901. More exotic varieties have emerged, but the drawbacks remain formidable. Sodium-sulfer batteries pack more energy, but function at temperatures near 600 degrees. Nickel-cadmium batteries last longer but overheat. Sodium nickel-chloride has worked well in sveral European electrics, and nickel-metal-hydride boosts range, but both are costly. Lithium-polymer and zinc-air batteries offer hope, but testing has only begun" (Miller, Briggs 2). Second, there takes a long amout of time to purchase and build the vehicle. "Reguardless of your decision to buy, build, or convert an electric vehicle, it is going to take you time to do it" (Brant 17). There is no existing network of new and used electric vehicle dealers that exist. There are not many repairs but when you do have some repairs,

to pay, the more the consumer is going to pay. "The EV1- the product of the California mandate and a $345 million investment by GM- carries 1,175 pounds of lead acid batteries. In part because of the cost of the battery, the EV1's now are on the market lease for as much as $34,000 over three years" (Dunn 3). The next advance is expected to come from Honda. This ex-quizzed car, "Will be equipped with nickel-meat-hydride batteries which give it a range of 125 miles-but at substantial cost: the batteries alone go for an eye-popping
