In the classic novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls," Ernest Hemingway uses the short period of three days to relay his message about the book. With the constant foreshadowing of impending doom, the readers along with the main character, Robert Jordan, become aware that his life will end at the end of these three days. Hemingway sets forth the idea that a lack of time can force a lifetime into that short period and people might do things that they would not normally have done. Jordan best exemplifies this idea in that through the course of three days his ideas along with the elements of his life change in ways he never anticipated.

At the beginning of the story, Jordan has a flash back of a discussion he had with his commanding general. He sourly says to his general that he has no time for girls and has much to think about without them. He is very dedicated to his task at hand and does not want anything to differ his attention. beliefs were also altered. While spending time with gypsies in the guerilla group, Jordan had on many occasions said that he did not believe in superstitions. When Pilar tells Jordan that a gypsy can predict death from its smell, he does not believe it and even thinks of it as ridiculous. There were several instances though that as time passed showed that he has actually begun to think superstitiously. First in chapter 31, he says that he finds it bad luck that Maria would not sleep with him the night before he was to blow the bridge. Another case was when Pablo returned to the group after deserting them, Jordan took it as a good luck sign that the bridge might do well. The fact that Pilar throughout the book would not revel what she saw in her palm reading of Jordan also made him believe that the task of blowing the bridge got harder every minute. Before these events, Jordan would have never taken anything as superstitious or as an omen for his task at hand.
