The internet and the world wide web has expanded greatly over the past decade. The internet is as common in homes as a telephone or a television. With its coming of age, way of life is becoming mainly "on-line". People use the internet and the web to do their daily tasks, jobs, and even leisure activities, such as enter contests and play interactively along with game shows that are on television through the internet, while in the comfort of their homes. The change from rarely using a computer to access the internet to relying on one daily for business, communication, and other activities has had major effects on the way things are done around the world. Communication is a major part of life that has been affected by the use of the internet and the web. People now have to the ability to chat with friends and family all over the world without racking up an outrageous phone bill. People send instant messages and enter chat rooms to communicate with one and another over the web. There is chat rooms set up and available to everyone on any topic imaginable. The internet and the world wide web has affected education too. A majority of classes taken now have internet backing. Coursework and syllabuses are displayed over the internet for students to review. Also, there are entire classes that can be taken over the internet. From reading the course books to taking the tests are all done over the web. Professors e-mail letters to students along with any other information that is needed, such as, test scores and times for help sessions. A majority of research done by students is over the internet. The internet allows people to browse encyclopedias, newspapers, dictionaries, and several other research tools quick and easy with the click of a button. All of this has brought a decline to the use and number of printed books, but this is not considerably a bad thing. Books are just one way of putting words down, as Jay Bolter wrote, "the end of traditional print literacy is not the end of literacy. The computer is simply the technology by which literacy will be carried into a new age" (Bolter 218). The internet and word wide web is a big part of current life and will continue to grow in the future. As Bolter proclaims that, "cultural literacy will require working with the computer, as the computer becomes the most important writing space in our culture" (217), not only will be a way of our culture, but a high-percentage of cultures in due time. Once all cultures hit the third wave or cyber space era, will the internet and the web be in virtually every home? If the answer to that is yes, then will there be any human to human interaction at all or will every daily ritual, job, and conversation be done in front of a computer? h other which before the internet was established could only be done in person or through post mail.
