JFK
There have been an ever-growing number of Presidents to call the White House their home and claim the highest leadership position in the free world. Each one has left his mark on history, though it seems as though those marks have varied a large amount in size of impact on history and the minds of those people that lived during that era. Some former presidents merely have their name in history books; some have humorous stories, such as President Taft getting stuck in the Whitehouse bathtub. However others have gotten themselves into quite a few predicaments, and an even smaller number showed great adeptness at getting out of these predicaments. This leads us to John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Why do so many Americans still hold him high on a pedestal? How did he make such a mark on history and not even have the opportunity to complete one full term in office? He had certain abilities that set him apart from most, but not all. He was surely a handsome and charismatic man, though there were surely others better than him. What set him apart was that he strove for the highest leadership
In Exploring Leadership on page 277 Komives explains that "no matter how effective or exciting a group or organization may be for its members, it will inevitably find itself in need of renewal." It is quite obvious that no one can put forth a full-scale effort everyday of the week without end and President Kennedy was well aware of this. He often provided renewal for himself by spending time with his family at the farm where the women in the family enjoyed horseback riding. They also spent a lot of time relaxing on their yacht. It is apparent that his kids provided most of the spunk he was able to portrait to the public. He also saw that others on his team of advisors needed this same kind of renewal with family. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, many of his advisors had not left the White House for almost a week, and the night before the decision to invade or not was made, he sent them all home to see their families. I think if one thing in his career showed compassion, this was it. After all, they didn't know if they would live to see another weekend. The composition of Kennedy's cabinet shows more than just the politics and diplomacies obvious at first sight. His cabinet began to show the real objective of his leadership strategy and that strategy can best be explained as having the right person in the right place. His cabinet had real substance and held new image. It was full of dynamic capable men that had wit, elegance, and intellect. It included individuals from prestigious universities like his younger brother Bobby and Shriver, some from industry leaders like Robert McNamara, and distinguished statesmen like Adalai Stevenson. In Kennedy's words, they were the best and the brightest. Kennedy's political campaign was not as easy as one might have thought. Sure he was raised in an extremely wealthy family that seemed to breed a truly magnetic personality into all that came from those bloodlines. But it turns out that his wealthy upbringing was one of his several large obstacles to overcome in the few short years leading up to the election. Kennedy also had to overcome the image of youth and inexperience. He was after all the first candidate for President born in the 20th century and the youngest ever. Thirdly, his faith was also working against him, as he was the first Catholic candidate for president, and the majority of the voters, especially southerners were Protestant. Lets take a closer look at how he overcame these impedances to Presidency. First, he made sure that everyone knew that no debates were to be bought or fixed for him. Secondly he got down on the personal level and met with some very economically distressed areas of the country in his campaign. He made specific efforts to meet with West Virginian coal mine workers and discuss issues that mattered to them, creating a strong sense of inclusion into the US government. This can strongly explain how he won so many votes from both democratic and republican parties. He made sure that the entire nation understood that there was no way his faith could convince him to shortchange his responsibility to the United States. He used his youth and vigor to his advantage, proving that he knew himself very well, as well as knowing what the general population wanted and needed in this time. Kennedy stressed the need for new ideas to jumpstart the nation into a new era and explained he was the man to lead the way. Overall Kennedy used these shortcomings to his benefit, or over shadowed them with his charisma and public speaking ability. He also won over the public with the proper use of media, he knew how to put on a good face. While he came off looking youthful and healthy, his
