Helen Keller was born like any ordinary baby, without any abnormalities. She was born June of 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. It was a sleepy and very southern town. The beginning of her life was very normal. She came, she saw and she conquered. At the age of 19 months she came down with a fever as a result of an acute congestion of the stomach and brain. After that, no part of life would ever be simple again. The doctor said she might not recover, although she did. Except as that sickness went away in came another, she became blind. Her mother was giving her baby, Helen, a bath one day, when she happened to pass a hand in front of Helen's eyes and there was no response. Her eyelids did not move, thus that is when her mother found out her baby girl was blind. The last word Helen remembered was "water." Later on they found out she was deaf because the doorbell rang and after many times that it rang she did not respond.

Annie died in June of 1968 from heart disease. She was famous and loved by everyone. Even though she did not reside with her family, they sent her telegraphs and she went home to be with them during the holidays. Helen was very smart and an adventuress girl. Helen really accomplished a lot and she will always be remembered for that.

Her parents went to Mr. Bell for advice and he told them about a private teacher, Annie Sullivan, who might be able help Helen. She was strict but was a very good teacher. Annie Sullivan took Helen away from her family and taught her a lot. Helen learned to talk with her fingers by placing her fingers on Annie's hand and making finger movements. She learned to see the expressions on Annie face by putting her fingers on her face. Helen called her "teacher." Helen was very smart and it was time for her to go to school. Helen learned with other children like her. Annie taught Helen manners, like how to eat and act appropriately with other people around her.
