Faith
The Question of Faith in the Odyssey and the Book of JobFrom a very young age we are thought about faith, which is the belief and trust in loyalty of a god. No matter what the religion there is always a god that followers are told to believe in, and in doing so he or she would be helped in his or her time of hardship by this god and in the end be rewarded. In Christianity and Judaism there is God and in Islam there is Allah. In other cultures, the people believe in more than one god. The Greeks believed in a number of gods and goddesses, including Zeus, Hera, Poseidon and Aphrodite. In Hinduism there are also a number of gods and goddesses, including the gods Vishnu, Shiva, and Hanuman and the goddess Lakshmi. No matter how different the religion and the practices of these religions, followers all have faith in their gods. They believe in the teachings and always try to do what the gods want them to do. Homer's The Odyssey, and The Book of Job, from the Bible are two different stories, but are similar in the fact that the main characters exhibit great faith in a god to help them through hard times, and because of this they are greatly assisted by their god during their trials and tribulations.
Clay, Jenny Strauss. The Wrath of Athena. Lanham, Maryland: Rowman & Littlefield. 1997. An example of an obstacle in the epic, which Athena helps Odysseus with, is when he was being held on the island of Kalypso. He remained there for over a period of seven years, but always kept confident in the fact that he would soon be released. While there, Kalypso did all that she could to convince Odysseus to finally abandon his marriage to Penelope, but he does not. Odysseus played into Kalypso's game, and did not do anything that would make her angry, or not be willing to let him go at some point. Finally, after seven years, Zeus finally stepped in after Athena alerts him to the fact that he was being held against his will. Finally Kalypso allowed Odysseus to leave. Athena then came to Odysseus while he is still there on Kalypso's island, and reminded him to remain calm, and to trust in her, which he did. When Athena did this he sees that someone is on his side.
