The Things They Carried

In war, the last thing a soldier should be thinking about is their loved ones, family, relatives, friends, and especially any distractions such as a crush on a girl or guy. Feeling one's emotions and inner feelings should not be in the same place at the same time as when one is fighting on the battlefield in war. A soldier by the name of Jimmy Cross was one of the soldiers who let his emotions and inner feelings get in the way of his duty at war. Jimmy was thinking of and had his mind on this one girl named Martha. Martha was the main distraction on Jimmy's mind during the war. If Jimmy did not have his mind on Martha during this time of war, maybe he would not have been so distracted from his work, and could have saved his friend from dying. Jimmy carried two photos of Martha in his wallet, one of her against a brick wall and the other one of her playing volleyball. He also carried two other things, which were from her as well. He carried a pebble and her letter that she wrote. The pictures, the pebble, and the letters that she wrote, all meant something to Jimmy Cross, since he loved this girl Martha with all his heart.

The two pictures that Jimmy Cross carried of Martha is the most symbo

Distractions in the end can cost one their life or someone else's. Jimmy Cross let his emotions and feelings get in the way of his missions and duty in the war. By letting his feelings cloud his better judgment, he lost his friend in the war. In war, the last thing someone needs is to be thinking about their loved ones, family, friends, or crushes. There is no room for mistakes or distractions on the battlefield. One must be focused and not be daydreaming of hopeless fantasies that will never come true at the wrong time. In the long run, if they do, it will cost them their lives, if not their own then someone else's life.

Martha gave Jimmy Cross a pebble, which she found on the beach, of which she was walking on. This pebble that she gave to him symbolized her tongue in his mouth while they were kissing. Sometimes an object given by someone can seem like a totally different object to another. For example, cold weather can mean just cold weather to one person, while in the view of another person it can represent a person of which is mean and evil to them. Let's say it is cold outside and one views it as just simply being

Another thing that Jimmy Cross carried were Martha's letters that she had written. The letters were in envelopes of course, but the envelopes and the letters inside of them did not just exist, they actually had symbolic meaning to them. After he received the letters he would lick the envelopes because he knew her tongue had been on there. Once again, Jimmy's weird obsession for Martha's tongue came up again. Jimmy's mind would sometimes think of Martha right in the
