Comparing 1984 and Animal Farm
George Orwell is perhaps one of the greatest authors of political ficition in our time. Two of his most famous and most popular novels are undoubtedly Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Orwell considered himself to be a socialist, but he was very critical of communism and especially totalitarianism. These two books explicitly express Orwell's political opinions, especially by means of satire. However, after reading and analyzing the two novels, it is clear to see that the two stories share an abundance of similarities and parallels. In a sense, these two great works are very much alike. One of the first things that a person may notice upon reading these two novels is the direct similarity of the characters. It is easy to see the similarities between Napoleon and Big Brother. In a way they are almost the exact character. The way they got into power was by overthrowing the previous regime. In the case of Napoleon, it was Mr. Jones, the farmer, and in the case of Big Brother, it was the capitalists. They also betrayed their closest comrades and allies by expelling them from the community. Napoleon betrayed his companion, Snowball, and nearly had him killed by the dogs in order to establish a totalitarian system, whil
Both of these novels had an extraordinary amount of similarities. The Thought Police were very similar to Napoleon's dogs and the luxury of a few came at the price of oppression for many in both books. The list of similarities is nearly endless because Orwell was making reference to the same thing in both cases. He was criticizing communist rule, particularly Stalin's regime in the Soviet Union at that time. In a way, Orwell was speaking out for the people of Russia. However, the effect of the two stories was slightly different. In Animal Farm Orwell accurately and critically captured the past, while in Nineteen Eight-Four he successfully predicted the future. His books can be rather difficult to read when one begins to think about the injustices of the past, and how they may be happening to us in the present, and could happen still in the future. We just might be too brainwashed to realize that even though Staling died long ago and Nineteen Eighty-Four is now twenty years behind us, politically we have not advanced much from Orwell's descriptions. Perhaps it is human nature and destiny to be subjected to unfair, undemocratic rule. Although one plays a larger role in the physical plot of the novels, it can be assumed, due to implied information, that Snowball and Emmanuel Goldstein had a lot of things in common. They were both among the founders of their respective movement. Emmanuel Goldstein was said to have been with Big Brother since the very beginning of the party, and even after they successfully overthrew the capitalists. Snowball and Napoleon also started out ass equals, sharing the responsibilities of making sure that everything ran smoothly after Mr. Jones had been expelled. However, both of these characters were betrayed and exiled because they showed signs of disagreeing with their respective comrades. Although, the two characters were not physically present in the story after their exile, their presence could still be felt. Goldstein was rumored to have started a secret underground brotherhood that was against the rule of Big Brother and wanted overthrow the party and free Oceania. However, this was never really proven to exist in the novel, it may have been just another one of Big Brother's lies used to scare the population into supporting him. Around Animal Farm, it was also rumored that Snowball was plotting to overthrow Napoleon and his regime and take the farm over himself, but that was never proven, and it may have been just another rumor perpetrated by one of Squealer's lies. e Big Brother politically exiled Emmanuel Goldstein and labeled him as counterrevolutionary and underground leader of the brotherhood. The manner in which these two characters act politically is very similar. They use lies and propaganda to win over the population by mean
