Paradigm Shifts
1.)A Paradigm Shift in the end, it is the definition of an educated person that has to change. The de facto objectives of the system today are to pour knowledge into the child. The more knowledge the child accumulates, the more successful they are within the system. Education remains linear in a decidedly non-linear world. In 1962, Thomas Kuhn wrote The Structure of Scientific Revolution, and fathered, defined and popularized the concept of "paradigm shift" .Kuhn argues that scientific advancement is not evolutionary, but rather is a "series of peaceful interludes punctuated by intellectually violent revolutions", and in those revolutions "one conceptual world view is replaced by another". Think of a Paradigm Shift as a change from one way of thinking to another. It's a revolution, a transformation, a sort of metamorphosis. It just does not happen, but rather it is driven by agents of change. There are many instances throughout history where there have been paradigm shifts in science: the Ptolemean / Copernican shift, Newtonian / Einsteinian shift, and so on. One scientific definition of chaos calls a function or system chaotic if it is extremely sensitive to initial conditions, periodic points are dense, and it is topologically transitive. Respectively, these three things mean that it is unpredictable, at the same time regular, and indecomposable. While these scientific definitions may be great to give a scientific definition of chaos theory, they do little to really explain what it is. The classic example of chaos theory involves a butterfly. This tiny insect sneezes, halfway around the world from the reader. The small sound created startles an elephant, which then causes the entire herd to stampede. A large stampede such as this throws up a large dust cloud, which though a series of imaginative steps eventually causes a hurricane. While this specific chain of events is highly improbable and implausible, it does illustrate the point well - a chaotic system is one that is very sensitive to initial conditions (something as small as a butterfly sneeze can cause something as large as a hurricane). 2.)Most everyone has at some point or another heard of chaos theory. However, few people know in any real detail what chaos theory entails. Although chaos isn't necessarily linked to fractals, the two subjects often go hand in hand and this information would probably be useful to anyone who was looking for information on fractals. Fractals may seem haphazard at first glance, yet each one is composed of a single geometric pattern repeated thousands of times at different magnifications, like Russian dolls nested within one another. They are often the visible remains of chaotic systems, systems that obey internal rules of organization but are so sensitive to slight changes that their long-term behavior is difficult to predict. If a hurricane is a chaotic system, then the wreckage made in its path is its fractal pattern.
