Abortion: A Choice or A Consequence?

Who are we as a civilization, to force our own morals or beliefs onto pregnant women considering abortion? Is it our right to determine what someone can do with his or her own body? Aren't there enough neglected children in this world without parents? I believe the person or persons whom contributed to this sexual act, consensually or otherwise, should be the only ones to decide if they are mentally and physically capable of raising a child. If they find they are not, in the end it will be their decision.

Beginning in the 1960's, erosion of some of the anti-abortion laws began to take place. However, more vocal groups trying to fix excess population growth did not support this. To them compulsory abstinence and birth control, was more palatable then voluntary abortion. Resulting in what was then and to this day legal chaos, which has been the situation with any reference to abortion, since it was first made illegal in this country. Contrary to popular belief, the legal ramifications against abortion are of comparatively recent origin. Until the early nineteenth century, at common law both in England and the United States of America, abortion before quickening was not illegal at all.

In conclusion, I do not feel as if abortion should be used as neither a contraceptive nor a birth-control method of choice. But I do believe that in some circumstances it is the best possible solution. Think of it like this, "There is a tremendous sadness and loneliness in the cry 'A woman's right to choose.' No one wants an abortion as she wants an ice-cream cone or a Porsche. She wants an abortion as an animal caught in a trap, wants to gnaw off it's own leg." (Mathewes-Green 1997) Is a woman's choice a wanted thing? No. It's a life choice or better yet, a consequence.

Another example would be Misty, a twenty-nine-year old woman extremely happy and content with her life. One day while she's walking her daily short route up to the second level of her local mall's car garage, a man grabs her from behind and throws her into his van. He proceeds to savagely beat and rape her. When through using her, he allows her to return home, alive at best. The conclusion? Misty has learned she's now with an unwanted child from a man who invaded her in the worst possible way. Her husband distraught and her family life in complete and utter turmoil, as a result. She's also suffering with severe depression, a baby to remind her of this horror is the last thing she needs. The worst part, she has now received news she is HIV positive. Now what exactly are her "choices?" Adoption? Should she have this child and deal with everything as it falls into place, not worrying
