Corporate Philanthropy

Over the last ten years, business began to change some of their beliefs. In today's society, businesses now place a high value on providing service to the community. According to a report by the Conference Board and the Points of Light Foundation, 92 percent of corporate executives believed their employees should participate in community service (Stallings, 1998). Corporate executives are pushing for employees to participate in community service because everyone involved benefits. Not only is the community positively influenced, but the employees and the business also benefit. Many companies have begun to install ways for their company to help out the surrounding community. Charities such as Habitat for Humanity and Kaboom, a program that builds playgrounds in areas of poverty, are two charity programs that businesses work with. When donating their time to charity business people learn how to work well in groups. Businesses also feel that their employees can gain a sense of leadership, while performing some of their charity work. Because most of the people being taught are not very aware of the subject matter, the businessperson must take control of the situation. Business people gain a wide variety of skills when they teach others about their line of work. Another skill that an employee gains while teaching is group-speaking skills (Wiesendanger, 1994). For many people, speaking in front of a crowd is a terrifying experience, but when business people start to teach others, they help to impro
