Flight
A detailed Summary of Flight
How much do you really love something? In the story "Flight," by Doris Lessing, we see how much Grandad loves his granddaughter, and how he doesn't want to give her up to someone else. The grandfather has to learn to let his granddaughter go. Alice, the granddaughter, has fallen in love with Steven, the postmaster's boy. The grandfather gets angry because she is very special to him and he does not want to loose the love that she gives him. This bitterness growing inside of him must be overcome in order for his granddaughter to be happy. Love is one of the most powerful emotions that will usually exist when everything else has gone.
Grandfather is fearful of loosing his last granddaughter and tries to get in the way of her love with Steven. This is shown at the very beginning when he says, "This you are old enough to go courting, hey?" In this quote, the grandad is trying to make Alice think that she is to young to be so serious about dating a guy. Alice never stops showing her love throughout the story, and in the end, the grandfather sees this love and is able to let her go. We are able to see Alice's love when she sings the little song, "I've got you under my skin..." This love song that she is singing shows that she has Steven on her mind and that she loves him. We then see love for not only Steven, but also grandad when "the young couple came around the corner...on the wrist of the postmaster's son balanced a young pigeon." Alice knows how much her grandfather loves pigeons. This little passage in the story is when the grandfather realizes that he will not be loosing Alice, but gaining a son. Grandad shows that he has truly accepted Alice's relationship with Steven when he let the bird go and "let his hands fall to his sides and stood erect, staring up into the sky." This action shows us that Alice is going to leaving the home to marry Steven, and that grandad had accepted what is happening.
True love always seems to prevail no matter what. Throughout the story, grandad feels many things that start with his granddaughter's relationship with the boy. He is terrified and frustra
