Romanticism

Romanticism can be categorized into about fifteen different traits. Among these traits, I will focus on three. The reason for this is that I feel these are the most important and influential characteristics of the Romantic poets. The first trait is the extreme emotional response that the poet brings to the work. The second trait is the focus on the unlimited power of imagination. This trait especially important, because, one of the aims of the Romantic movement was to spark creativity in every person. Third, the Romantic s believed that morality and religion were up to each individual who did not need to conform to the social norm. This is important because in this era people pushed for both religious and social revolution. Because of this notion of revolution and change, people developed the notion to try to change the world through self-expression and creativity.

Mary Robinson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge were two of many Romantic poets in the eighteenth century. By studying one poem from each poet, I see a similar pattern that they use through images, dreams and mystery. Moreover, their poems can be hard to interpret. They wrote these difficult poems to encourage readers to use their imaginations so

As stated earlier, the Romantics focused on unlimited powers of imagination. Studying "The Haunted Beach" I came to a realization that Robinson did not write typical eighteenth-century poems. This poem has no focus on "reason"; it is merely a story of one man's battle against his emotions. The Romantics believed that all things are connected, from nature to man, so to have this connection one must pull all things together. This poem does not have control or restraint; what it does have is a common battle between the divine in nature, which comes together with the divine in the fisherman's self. Throughout out the poem, we see the divine in nature through short phrases such as "ghostly faces white as snow", "screaming curlew" and "flashing fires the sands illume". Mary Robinson was a significant poet for her time. She was able make readers to lend their own imagination and creativity to a poem in a completely different way than pervious poets.
