Central America is composed of six countries; Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize and Guatemala. Despite that Central America is located close to the United States in relation to the Eastern Hemisphere, their ways of life are indescribably different. When one discusses poverty in the United States, many people do not really know what poverty is. It seems like only a select few are afflicted by it here and programs like welfare and food stamps seem to lesson the effects. In Central America when one talks about poverty he or she is including a large proportion of the population. One measure of poverty is the earning power of the individual. I believe Central America's main problem lies within a weak, corrupt government. The result of their government is poor or unavailable education, health care, and an extremely bad job market. Also they have a corrupt military a big business conglomerate which cares little or none for the common people. The military is responsible for enforcement, which includes death squads, torture, and public execution. The Catholic Church was activity involved in rebellion as well. They helped to organize community and labor groups for the people. These groups gave people the inspiration and mass power to combat the government. Although the Catholic clergy didn't fight violently alongside the guerillas, their lives were at risk, and some were taken as a result. The government in Central America needs to improve in several areas in order for them to solve their poverty problem. One of the first things the government needs to do is win back the respect of its people. For their government to be successful, the majority of the governed people involved must have faith in its leaders; the Central American government needs to instill this faith. In order for this to happen the Central American government needs financial help from other countries like the United States. They need to convince the American government that any money that was given to them would go to improving their government thus, winning back its people.
