Changing into a Western Civilization

In Mohandas Gandhi's "Indian Home Rule" and Kabaka Daudi Chwa's "Education, Civilization, and 'Foreignization' in Buganda" neither author seems to approve of Western civilization. Both men have their views toward Western civilization and both men express them in their articles. Gandhi appears to be more tolerant of Western civilization, but still not supportive of it, while Chwa conveys more disgust toward it.

Gandhi points out the drastic changes caused by Westernization while ultimately stating that this civilization will self-destruct. He talks about the ways of people and how they used to plow fields using manual labor and travel by wagon. Now with civilization, a man can plow a substantial area of land by himself with the help of a steam engine while another man can travel over 400 miles in one day by means of a train. Also, regarding fighting each other, a man used to measure his opponent by his physical strength, but now any man can kill another with the pull of a trigger. He states, "Men will not need the use of their hands and feet. They will press a button, and they will have their clothing by their side. They will press another button, and they will have their newspape

Chwa shows more disgust in his article than Gandhi because he is more disturbed by Western civilization's effects on his native traditional customs. He said that younger generation didn't disobey these moral codes because they were taught that if they did break the code that they would be overpowered by an evil, incurable or fatal disease. Chwa concludes, "All this, however, is of course, no longer the case. The present so-called education and civilization prevailing in this country has completely destroyed this moral code by removing the constant fear just referred to above from the minds of the young generation of the Baganda..." The Western civilization and education began to teach the young Baganda minds about freedom and liberty which changed their views on life and eliminated their fear of breaking the moral code. Originally, they were taught that if they broke the moral code they would be punished for doing so. Now the new ways brought to them by Western civilization showed them that they have choices and are free to make those choices. He wraps up his article saying, "...we ha
