Kino vs. Jonas: A Closer Look
Kino vs. Jonas: A Closer Look at their Attributes Have you ever read about two different characters in two different novels who are so similar and yet so different at the same time? Recently, I've read about two characters who fit this description perfectly. These two characters are Kino and Jonas. Kino is the main character in a novel called The Pearl by John Steinbeck, which is about a man who finds fortune and tries to help his family out with the money, but soon fails because of his lack of knowledge. Kino's thoughtfulness and sentimental attitude reminds me of Jonas from The Giver by Lois Lowry because Jonas becomes very loving and caring toward his family and friends throughout the book. These two characters are similar in that they both exhibit being thoughtful and loving, but they are different in that Jonas demonstrates that he is very curious while Kino isn't. Speaking of similar qualities, throughout the novel, The Pearl, Kino repeatedly demonstrates being thoughtful and loving. For example, on page 24, Kino planned for his baby boy to be very fortunate in life by having rich clothes, "But Coyotito - he was the one - he wore a blue sailor suit from the United States and a little yachting cap such as Kino's".
These two characters have a very special trait in common, but they also have some dissimilar traits. Throughout the book, The Pearl, Kino really presented that he wasn't very curious at all and would take a whole lot of risks. For example, on page 17, Kino showed that he was very alert under the water when he went hunting for pearls, "Kino moved cautiously so that the water would not be obscured with mud or sand...". This quote explains that Kino was willing to take that risk in order to find a pearl to trade it in for money. He wasn't very curious at what would happen to him because he went into the water and came back up with what everyone thought to be "The Pearl of the World." Furthermore, on page 85, Kino was prepared to do anything to fight off the enemy, "Only twenty feet separated him from the enemy now, and he tried to remember the ground between... he drew the amulet string over his shoulder and loosened the loop from the horn handle of his great knife". Kino was ready to fight the enemy like a wild bull and was ready to take a risk and save his family from danger. He wanted his family to be safe, but at the same time, he would do anything to not let his family in the hands of Satan. Kino has a very interesting quality, but Jonas, on the other hand, seemed to be the opposite. This quote explains that Jonas was very curious and wanted to know what it was like out there, but he didn't want to take any risks to explore. Unlike Kino, Jonas was a very well-mannered young man who would listen to the rules. Furthermore, on page 101, Jonas was very curious and wanted to know what causes pain, " 'Giver,' he asked one afternoon following a day when he had been sent away, 'what causes you pain?' ". Jonas was eager to know everything there was to know, but the Giver wanted to take time getting use to the memories that he sent to Jonas. Even though the G
