A detailed Summary of Migration

Migration, like all elements in a science, follows a specific model, which can be used to study the process. There are various factors which lead to a person making the decision to migrate, weather internally within a country, or even moving to a new country. Even though these two situations may seem very distant, they are still based on the same model. However, often times the decision for many to immigrate to a new country has more severe factors causing the migration. Two of the most important elements in migration are push and pull factors. Push factors cause someone to move away, i.e. low wages, no work, poverty, or bad weather. Pull factors attract people to a new area. These could be jobs, universities, weather, girlfriends, etc. Along with these factors, there is a decision making process which has been studied and documented. According to these data, the decision process is as follows: 1) The perceived difference between one's home and destination. 2) The effectiveness of the information flow, or what the immigrants already living there are saying to the others in the mother state. 3) The distance of the move. Although a very different situation, my decision to move to Miami also fits into this mold. I was recently challenged with the decision of choosing a University to attend. For many, this is a simple decision. The majority of my friends had chosen to attend one of the main universities in Oregon. I had decided earlier that I would not stay in Oregon. There were several main factors pushing me away. First, I wanted to attend a university with a good program in Portuguese (good luck finding that in Eugene). Second I wanted to be somewhere where not only could I study Spanish and Portuguese, but also somewhere where one could live the language and culture in his daily life. It did not take me long to stumble across Miami. Then there were the pull factors. Miami... Will Smith was singing this great song, the women on Univision always looked so beautiful, the sun seemed to always be shining, and here I am. For me, the distance didn't seem to great (even though my mom thinks it's far) and I didn't have the need to stay with my friend's from home since I was ready for a change. So after a visit to the campus here at FIU, and a trip to South Beach, the decision became a pretty simple yet exciting one to make.
