The Two Works by Hairston and Flower

The two works by Hairston and Flower, "What Happens When People Write," explain the respective authors views on the difference between self-expression writing and writing for an audience. In Hairston's exert she concentrates on the main points of explanatory and exploratory styles of writing. Explaining what makes each style appropriate for certain papers. Flower concentrates more on how to effectively convey ones message to the reader. Listing the key aspects of what a writer should focus on when thinking about what the reader needs to hear.

Hairston's expert has an overall optimistic feel towards writing throughout the piece. She maintains the point of view that both explanatory and exploratory writing can fulfill the need of ones assignment. She does, however, break down what make


main points are essential in communicating to the audience. First, the writer should assume to what degree the reader knows about the topic at hand. Then the author can state any information that the reader might need to know to fully understand what the author is writing about. Second, what is the attitude of the reader? This is important because the point of attack one takes will vary depending upon it. That also ties in with the knowledge aspect, because the reader bases their attitude of prior knowledge. Last but not least, the writer should consider his audiences needs. In analyzing the audiences needs, the writer can adapt the paper to better communicate with the reader.
