WW1

I am doing my project on World War I. The first World war began in 1914 and ended in 1919. I am going to study about different aspects of the war such as who was involved, how it all started, Canada's role, some of the major battles, and what it was like for all of the soldiers who fought in the war.

World War I is often referred to as the "great war", or "the war to end all war's". It was the most significant event of the twentieth century. The war all started after the European nations divided themselves into alliance systems, the Triple Alliance, and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance consisted of the German Empire,

Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente was made up of Britain, France, and the Russian Empire. These alliances were supposed to deter confrontations but instead created enemies. Another reason for the war was the assassination of the crown prince of Austria, Franz Ferdinand by a young Serbian named Princip while he was visiting Sarajevo to inspect troops on June 28, 1914. Princip fired two shots, one hitting ferdinand in the throat and the other striking his wife, Sophia in the stomach, killing them both. Princip then swallowed poison and then jumped into the river in an attempt to ki

Life at home for Canadians was good, most people worked at weapons factories or sent food and supplies over to the soldiers. The Canadian government continued to recruit soldiers throughout the war.

Women in the war were very important. They started to work in factories and build weapons and ammo to send overseas to the soldiers. Some women actually went over to help out in the war effort. During the war women gained respect by showing that they could do men's jobs. This is when women gained the right to vote.

Life in the trenches was terrible for the soldiers. There were rats and disease everywhere. The soldiers heads were covered with lice and there was no way for them to clean themselves. Food was scarce so the soldiers had to go for days sometimes without any food. When the men in the trenches were in mud and water all day they would get foot rot which was very painful and made it hard to move around. They always had to be looking out attacks or bombs falling everywhere. At night the you couldn't sleep because of the noise and sounds that they heard. When they were called to "go over the top" they had to run through no mans land, dodging grenades, bombs, and gunfire. Of the soldiers that made it to the enemy trench, they had to through barb wire fencing and often were killed by machine gun fire. Shoot as many as they could and then retreat back to there trench.
